Gabby Douglas Wins American Cup and Stops Doubts about Olympic Comeback

The days are winding down until the 2016 Olympics and Rio and Gabby Douglas is making sure you don’t forget her name beforehand. The 20-year-old gymnast, who showed her prowess at the 2012 Olympics, proved that she will not be forgotten by winning the AT&T American Cup in Newark, New Jersey.

Winning the American Cup was the best way Douglas could say she is ready for the 2016 Olympics. This is the first time snagging the top prize since winning all around at the 2012 Olympics. Her beam routine at the American Cup was amazing and could only be seen as the right step to getting gold in Rio.

Douglas has already made history as the first African American woman to win an individual all-around championship and now she is hoping to go back to and repeat her gold victories in individual and team competitions. Not many American gymnast make a is back to the Olympics for a second time, let alone win medals while there. The only gymnast to become a gold medalist twice was Věra Čáslavská in 1968.

Despite her slim chances, Douglas believes she has what it takes. “From the bottom of my heart, I really believe that I can achieve more,” Douglas told USA Today. “And it’s just not for the wrong intentions. I’m like, ‘Guys, I’m back. I’m serious.’ I feel like gradually and the more and more I keep proving that, I really hope that people believe it.”
