D’Angelo, Nick and Iggy: A Social Media Sh*t storm

Man, it’s no fun learning lessons the hard way, especially when the whole world is watching. But that’s exactly what’s happening to LA Laker rookie guard D’Angelo Russell. Russell, who just turned 20 last month is suffering the consequences from breaking the sacred “bro code” among his Laker teammates. It’s a well-known fact that professional athletes expect and depend on this code so they can speak freely in lockers rooms, hotels, airplanes, etc. It’s important for players to have a level of comfort with each other in order to build camaraderie and trust within the team. Russell broke that trust when he secretly recorded his teammate and friend Nick Young’s conversation while they were in a hotel last week. In the recording, Young allegedly talks on camera about cheating on his finance.

Enter Iggy Azalea…Young’s finance. The two have been engaged since last spring, so naturally rumors are swirling about the status of their relationship. Iggy has been active on twitter. Her first tweet after the video became public simply stated:

Since then she has responded to fans inquiries by tweeting she’s “Just chillin” and that “Nothing is black and white in life. Every situation is different, depending on the circumstance.” While it sounds like she’s not rushing to make any decisions at the moment, she also tweeted “I’m not tryna marry a cheater.”

Meanwhile, to say that Russell is getting the cold shoulder from teammates, is an understatement. Since the video became public, something that Russell denies any involvement in, he has been shunned by teammates at meals, ushered to his car by security after practices, and booed by the Staples Center crowd when his name was announced. Before the game, Young, Russell and Coach Byron Scott held a media session to discuss the incident and how it was affecting the team. Russell has apologized over and over, and now there is even talk of trading him….COME ON…ARE YOU KIDDING? Yes, he messed up, and yes he is going to have to work really hard to gain back trust, but to trade your No.2 pick, the one expected to fill the shoes of your retiring superstar, doesn’t make sense, no sense at all.

Yup, no fun learning the hard way. Everyone has phones. You’ve got to watch what you say and do…AT ALL TIMES. You would have thought Young would have already figured that one out. On March 22, two women accused him and Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson of sexually harassing them, according to Sports Illustrated. The team said they investigated the allegations, and were supportive of the players’ “interpretations of what happened.” Never the less it’s more bad press for the Lakers who are suffering from one of their worst seasons in recent history.

I’m betting Kobe Bryant is thinking retirement can’t come soon enough.
